"Unscientific look at receivers in draft Martz might favor" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-01 14:48:41

Again we turn to GM Scot McCloughan for his thoughts on the position. He figures Bruce and Darrell Jackson are the front-runners to win starting jobs. But he added Arnaz contend. Ashley Lelie and Jason Hill (more on him later) ordain also be in the mix. McCloughan described the receivers in a similar tone as he talked about the go rushers. And my response is going to be a lot similar to what I wrote about the pass rushers. Although the 49ers' receiving corps is among the least-imposing in the league the 49ers were wise not to go after anyone in free agency with the ridiculous money that was being thrown around for guys who probably aren't even No. 1 guys. The Vikings paid Bernard Berrian a reported six-year. $42 million deal with $16 guaranteed. Javon Walker who played eight games last toughen and according to Mike Shanahan needs microfracture surgery on his bad knee received a six-year. $55 million deal with $16 million guaranteed from the Raiders. I seriously doubt the 49ers will ever experience spending the extra money to get those players. The first thing that jumps out at you is the similarities when looking at the wide receivers chosen by the Rams while Mike Martz was offensive coordinator and head coach. On paper these receivers look about the same. The prototypical Martz receiver is about 5-11. 185 pounds and runs 40 yards in 4.44 seconds. I'm only theorizing here but it seems that in this system you need a smaller quick guy who can adjust his routes on the fly. He needs to get in and out of breaks quickly. Posted By: iLL49er (09/03/2008 1:59:25 PM)Comment: Matt. Question for you in regards to the scouting of Alex Smith before the draft. A friend told me he heard from either you or Matt Barrows' reporting that Nolan asked Rodgers and Smith to do some silly things like hop on one foot etc and Rodgers declinded to do these things but Alex complied.. and this was move of the decision making affect in selecting Alex Smith. Is this true? Response: I don't believe that's entirely accurate. I don't think Rodgers ever declined to do anything. (That would've been pretty bad form.) I don't know that the 49ers asked Rodgers to do that stuff. I think the 49ers had made up their mind much earlier that Smith was the No. 1 QB. I'm not sure about the specifics of instructing Smith to hop on one leg but I seem to remember they asked him to do some stuff with ballhandling such as moving the ball from one hand to the other while circling his knees. --Matt M. Posted By: Cody Pickett (09/03/2008 9:47:21 AM)Comment: FYI: . On paper. Quentin Groves looks like the perfect prospect to make the transition from college DE to NFL OLB in 3-4 defense. But last season (2007). Auburn moved from DE to OLB for a few games and he proved a bust so they moved him back to DE. Eventually he may make it as a 3-4 OLB in the NFL but at this point he looks like a high assay choice who should not be drafted until Round 3. OT Sam Baker was well coached had a very good career at USC and indeed has lotsa OT skills. But he is a bit small (6'4-5/8". 305 lbs) without the frame to add much go across & bulk and he is a finesse player. & not particulary powerful as a run blocker. He prolly will have a 10 year career as a lay of the pack non-star OLT. He deserves to be drafted late 2nd round but cuz of his USC heritage he'll prolly go between # 32 and # 40. Posted By: Cascarche (08/03/2008 3:42:57 PM)Comment: Thanks Pete. While we ponder the abilities of Fitzy G. there probably are not many people who seriously think we'd get him. The divisional rivalry thing pretty much kills it. However thats a huge cap be they are carrying for him so they might be motivated to alter him. Its been speculated on pft that he might not be willing to structure his current deal on the cards coz he wants out which would add up. Razor - not every player plays their best in every game change surface all-pros have off days especially at the WR position due to the fact they rely on a) a QB to throw to them and b) a line to give the QB time. Randy only had about 7 catches for about 80 or 90 yards (from memory cant be bothered to research the exact totals) in the whole playoffs.. doesn';t mean he isn't awesome! Posted By: Wally Champ (08/03/2008 9:33:00 AM)Comment: Matt. Larry Fitzgerald is on the trading block if they can't re-do his contract. If the Niners could get him for a 1st or change surface a 1st and a 4th or another player they should do it in a heartbeat. No WR in this draft is guaranteed to be a Fitzgerald and the guy is only in his mid-twenties. Please ask McNolan about this. I know that Az wouldn't want to trade him in the division but even if that means slighlty overpaying the Niners should do it. It sounds like the Cardinals might have to get rid of him. This would border up the offense instantly. I'm not going to go on and on about this but I conclude very strongly about it and I evaluate that the Niners should do it immediately. I would even give up two day one picks for the guy. Any thoughts? Posted By: Alameda Bill (07/03/2008 4:20:51 PM)Comment: I believe the first two picks ordain be OL and WR. With only Staley. Jennings and Duckett a DT conversion communicate on the roster we need an OT who can compete to start on the right side and backu the Left. Carl Nicks is my guy. 6'5" 341 and 5.23 40. His bevel and shuttle times indicate he plays closer to 5.27 by my calculations. But if you plug his charge and speed into the kinetic energy formula he puts out the same energy as a 300 lb lineman running a 4.94. He gives us solid give at both OT spots. As for the WR we don't be speed. That is what we drafted Hill and signed Lelie for. We be to get them in the game. What we need is a guy who can get open 2 yards beyond the stakes and catch the ball! My favorite is Earl Bennett. 1st aggroup all conference in a study conference as a frosh soph and measure year as a junior. He has good coat and ran a 4.48. His first 20 and shuttle times were faster than that but his cone was pretty bad. I calculate a playing speed of 4.52 which is plenty fast enough but guess he will improvethat cone time on his pro day. Hicks and Bennet in the first 2 rounds and I am a Happy camper Posted By: Mike in SF #2 (07/03/2008 1:48:38 PM)Comment: SFO - I'm not sure your stats are right. History has always showed the two hardest postitions in the NFL to adjudicate talent are the QB and WR. The statistics show me a completely different story when it comes to drafting a wide receiver that is productive and talented. In 2007 let's look at the top 5 receivers in the three main categories - Total Catches. Total Yards and Total Touchdowns. The top five in catches are T. J. Houshmandzadeh - 7th round choose; Wes Welker - Undrafted; Reggie Wayne - First round; Derrick Mason - 4th Round; Brandon Marshall 4th go. The Top Five in Touchdowns are Moss - 1st go; Edwards - 1st round; Owens - 3rd round; T. J. - 7th round; and Greg Jennings - 2nd round. The Fop Five in total yards are Wayne - 1st go; Moss - 1st Round; Chad a k a. #85 - 2nd round; Fitz G - 1st round; and T. O. - 3rd round. Bottom line - you can find NFL talent in any round of the compose when it comes to the Wide Receiver lay and there are a significant amount of wide receiver "busts" from the top picks of every draft. Posted By: Vyron X (07/03/2008 12:53:08 PM)mention: Hardy may not be the Martz-fit but he could be the next TO. I think he would be a good choose if he's still there. Even as talented as he is he's still a bit raw and I don't think any rookie WR will have a major impact on this season. But I think Hardy is potentially a great WR for the future. forge gives us go for the future. Hardy is the big time prototype WR. I would also like to see us package some later round picks to move up and get a back up 2nd round or 3rd round pick. This year we don't need quantity we need quality. OT and OG are guaranteed to be in the top 3 rounds. I would be fine if we didn't compose one defensive player this year. I want OT. WR. OG. QB another OL for depth. & with trades to move up that might be all the picks we have left. Our defense will be pretty good if the offense can actually move the ball and score. Posted By: SFO (07/03/2008 12:47:06 PM)mention: If we wait till past the 2nd round for a WR in this draft than we will most likely have another average at best depth guy on our squad. History shows that for the most part at the WR position guys usually do as come up as they were drafted. If we are ever going to get a "play maker" than we should draft one with one of our first 2 picks probably 1st if not especially with this years group we are looking at mediocrity at best and IMO we undergo enough of that already. And by the way. Martz needs to figure out that the "Big Fast" WR is the future of the NFl. DB's are getting faster and bigger every year we can't have an entire aggroup of Wes Welker's. I am still not a fan of Martz I think he over rated and his "system" has not worked since his SB days it's overplayed and way to much for an avg. QB like Smith. Posted By: KezarMike (07/03/2008 12:24:10 PM)mention: I think that Bruce. contend. Lelie. Hill and VDavis can be an effective receiving corps but we'll see what Martz thinks (why would DJackson be on the aggroup?). The team probably will go OL more than once in the first few rounds of the draft with DL next possibilty (and maybe WR if alter guy availble). BUT may I say something re: QB? Now Martz may decide that Smith/Hill show great potential if properly coached but if there really IS a possible great one available the team should certainly consider taking him. There are many examples of teams hitting it big drafting QBs even when they already have a great one (though admitedly this is easier to do when you already have a very good team that isn't cryin out for linemen) - an "ancient" example - 1967 - Lamonica was 26 years old. MVP of the AFL (threw 30 TDs before passing rules changed) and would have a 34 TD later on and another MVP award. But the Raiders took Ken Stabler in the second round - he was a great one in college and we all know what he did in the NFL. Of cover one could draft a QB in the high rounds and know that he couldn't go somewhere else in a few years (nor require any signing bonuses or guaranteed money). Posted By: Mateo (07/03/2008 11:53:04 AM)Comment: Why not put Vernon Davis at WR and shift Michael Robinson to TE/FB. Send Hill or Lelie downfield and let Davis. Battle and Bruce dominate the lay. Cut Jackson and Gilmore. If VD ever learns how to block just imagine VD and Rob blocking upfield if Gore or Foster break through the first layer of defense. They can dominate in the middle of the field. And if Martz uses Smith's downfield throwing abilities. Lelie and Hill might actually be useful this year. On defense. I think we are fine. If our offense stays on the field a little bit longer than last year we are an instant top 10 defense. Though quick two minute scoring drives won't be something to complain about. What we really need to do is draft offensive linemen with every one of our picks. If we can't protect the qb and open up room for the rbs we may as well fold up like NFL Europe. (Europa) Posted By: Kevin (07/03/2008 11:53:02 AM)Comment: Nice blog entry which displays the depth at WR in the compose. While this year's group might not feature a real lights out look the group is solid overall. I really don't understand some of the Hardy-mania comments I see on here. Desean Jackson would be great for the aggroup but I don't think that the 9ers have much of a shot at grabbing him. I am also not a fan of late-first go WR picks. If there is an awesome WR prospect he'll be gone in the first few picks then after that there is a larger group of guys with not much difference amongst them. I'd rather the 9ers look for a player at either line preferably one who can play multiple positions. I don't think it is imperative that the 49ers act a WR in the first when they have other holes as well.

"San Francisco Martz Madness? Right on!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-12 12:40:44

Mike Martz is now part of the NFC West and division rival to my beloved Arizona Cardinals. Quaking in my boots? Well.. not really. Excited as hell to be honest. Coach Pendergast broke an NFL record in last year's matchup between the current 49ers OC and the Cardinals. Was it negative 18 total rushing yards for the Lions? Something equally pathetic. Now we get to face him twice a year. As a 49er. The one team I truly despise.. the Folsum Street hippie team. The Cardinals swept the 49ers for 2 straight years in recent history (or was it 3?) Last year the streak ended. Does the streak begin again in 08? I think so sports fans. Alex Smith - the new Mike Martz biometrics experiment? I think not! Frank Gore was touted to be the new center of Mike Martz's offense? Yeah tell that to the Detroit plethora of Running Backs of last year. Welcome to the NFC West. Coach Martz. I welcome you with open arms sir! Will Kurt Warner be the QB to light up Martz's new team as Mike formulates how to make up the point difference? Wouldn't that be cool to see? I believe this is Matt Leinart's team but god forbid if Kurt gets to start those games vs the 49ers it'll be magic to watch.

"Bruce Reunites with Martz in San Francisco" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 04:04:27

Wide receiver Isaac Bruce officially signed with the 49ers on Tuesday reuniting the longtime Rams receiver with his former St. Louis continue coach in 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz. “Mike has been move of my career I accept 11 out of 14 seasons that I’ve played and he’s been paramount in the statistics that are behind my label,” said Bruce. “I’m glad to be here with him.” Martz is equally enthusiastic about having his former pupil back in the change surface. “Isaac was always a feature of our offense,” said the 49ers new coordinator. “He was always a go-to guy and if we had to get something going we would get the roll to him alter away. He’s obviously a future Hall of Famer and in watching him he has not diminished in my estimation. He looks desire he always has so to have him be able to come in and answer at a high aim in our offense is really exciting.” Hampered by a hamstring injury in 2007. Bruce’s numbers weren’t up to his usual standards ending the year with 55 catches for 733 yards. Those numbers still would have made him the 49ers leading receiver a year ago topping the leading stats held by Arnaz Battle who had 50 catches for 600 yards. Asked if he was coming in as a starter. Bruce replied that he hadn’t seen a roster or a depth map yet but that it was his expectation to compete for the starting spot. A trip down the hall to Martz’ office quickly confirmed that expectation. “Isaac is our starting Z obviously and that’s where he’ll start off,” said Martz. “Now if he does something to lose it that’s up to him but I don’t evaluate that from Isaac.” Hooking up with Martz was a study selling point for Bruce in coming to San Francisco but change surface that was outdone by his goal to compete for a Championship and his belief that the 49ers undergo a realistic shot to compete for one. “This organization as it is right now has a very very good defense,” said Bruce. “It’s a defense that I accept can be at the top level. I’m sure with Coach Martz coming in here he’ll have this offense turned completely around and this aggroup is going to vie for a Championship this toughen.” Bruce had one of his finer outings measure season at the expense of that 49ers defense catching 8 balls for 145 yards in their first contest in St. Louis. “It was a challenge in that game just knowing what I was going up against,” said Bruce of the 49ers secondary. “I see smart guys in the defensive backfield and they are guys you have to be really conscientious of in running routes and you have to work to get open against them. They bring in an attitude of winning and competing and that’s the main thing you need at this level.” Many fans who watched the 49ers offense struggle measure year would also lay out that the team needs a proven play but Bruce didn’t be phased by the change state competition that is expected to occur between Alex Smith and Shaun Hill. “When Marc Bulger took over he didn’t undergo much undergo when Kurt Warner stepped in he didn’t undergo much undergo,” pointed out Bruce. “I am sure they ordain get a lot of experience during training camp and the four preseason games. They ordain be confident when they go out and they will make plays in this system.” Bruce a future Hall of Famer eclipsed the 14,000-yard career receiving mark last season to act him up to third place on the NFL’s all-time receiving list. He has enjoyed 1,000 yard receiving seasons in six out of his last nine years and said that in entering his 15th NFL season there’s no doubt that gas is left in his tank. “I have a lot left,” said Bruce. “If that wasn’t the inspect I wouldn’t be here in San Francisco right now. I haven’t thought about football these last two months and so I haven’t set my goals yet but I will. My hopes are very high and I’m going to set my goals very high and I believe I will attain them.” Bruce also believes that the 49ers lack of success offensively last year ordain not be tolerated or repeated while under Martz’ watch. “There are no ifs ands or buts when it comes to this offense and the guy that is coaching it,” said Bruce. “Martz expects a lot out of you. He is going to expect you to raise your aim and from that level go to the next level and keep that. That way there is a never an air of a starter going down. The guys who go in are expected to play and act at that same level. I have seen it many times in St. Louis. Someone was injured and a guy like Mike Furrey would step in and the production level wouldn’t go down.” Suiting up for a team that has been an NFC West compete for more than a decade will act some getting used to for Bruce but the former Rams player said he’s embraced the switch. “Just being a 49er now is totally different for me,” said Bruce. “I look at it as a challenge and I relish the moment. Being around the facility and seeing guys I’ve played against and guys who have cause to be perceived me in the past it’s definitely new to me and probably won’t really hit until I put on a uniform and go out and perform for the 49ers. But. I’m a member of the 49ers now and I’m happy about it.” Bruce wore #80 for the duration of his go with the Rams. Although the number is not currently taken no receiver has been assigned that number since Jerry Rice departed the aggroup. Bruce said he’ll evaluate out his new number in the next few weeks. The broach between Bruce and the 49ers might undergo go together even more quickly had it not been for Martz’ misplaced cell phone. As soon as the Rams released Bruce command manager Scot McCloughan began dialing up the offensive coordinator just to alter sure Martz was in favor of the acquisition. “I thought I had lost my phone when I anticipate I actually just left it in the car but we were off that day and I had no idea they had released him,” said Martz. “I finally found my phone that evening and saw all of these missed calls from Scot. When I heard his message it was pretty thrilling.”

"Thought Matrix challenge: ?What?s so heroic about ?Heroes???" posted by ~Ray

I actually have a post in mind with that title but I can’t seem to find the time to sit down and create verbally it. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do especially now that we’re knee deep into philosophy. While I won’t furnish out my thesis here is all I have to say — Is Peter Petrelli really a hero? Indeed he has done everything he could to stop the bomb from exploding. But in the end he would’ve exploded in the city anyway if Nathan didn’t go. Is Nathan Petrelli really a hero? Indeed he saved the day but what intentions were in his heart? Guilt? Remorse? Regret? And let us not forget the politician’s path he walked for majority of the season. For now. I’m throwing this idea around to those who want to write something -related for the quest. What’s so heroic about I wish I had something smarter to say about Heroes but I tend to look at TV shows in terms of how they appeal to their target demographic rather than their importance in teaching philosophy and moral values (hee. ’cause I’m shallow :P). And in that vein. I think people love Heroes so much because despite their supernatural abilities the characters are so relatable. If we had a Mary Sue character who both has Peter’s good intentions and saves the day like Nathan where’s the fun in that? In response to your Nathan and Peter blurb. I consider both Petrellis to be heroes (now. Mama Petrelli on the other hand…) because for me it’s not about what they actually did but what they set out to do. Peter’s spent a huge part of the toughen trying to save New York from himself despite coming off as deranged (and suicidal?) to a lot of people which is pretty heroic to me. And while Nathan is a shark by nature. I think Hiro said it best: “You pretend you do not care about anyone. But you care too much.” Also to me. Nathan does care about others but his distrust of populate in general (because hello politician) makes him apprehensive about acting on it or letting it show. And I think he saved New York because of three things: 1) he knew he was the only one who could; 2) he loves his little brother; 3) wouldn’t it suck having the state you just got elected senator for blow up shortly after your victory? Wading back to the shallow end of the pool now: Whyyy did they have to kill Isaac? Apparently there’s some unwritten rule somewhere stating that the hottest guy in a big ensemble direct.

"The Essence of History" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-21 14:13:14

Yesterday I was reminded of a conversation I’ve had with one of our administrators. A assort of teachers and I were wondering of the possibility of delaying the exam week (first week October) to give us more time since a lot of us have just begun the 2nd quarter. She — being the farthest thing from a historian or a social scientist — simply smiled and said. “Don’t you like that? Then you’ll have less to inform. Just give them the If I teach the history of China what would its essence sound like? ordain it suffice for me to say. It is a reality that when pressed for measure teachers would have to rush their lessons. Either that or entire topics will be dropped or postponed to the next grading period. It is not surprising that many don’t get to finish their syllabus for a year since being realistic now a school year isn’t as desire as it used to. — what is that? I won’t belie to experience anything about teaching subjects other than mine. Nonetheless. I guess that some subjects lend themselves better to being rushed than others. Regardless the first thing that gets compromised when lessons are rushed is learning. I accept this is the essence of teaching History has been notorious as a subject filled with the memorization of “useless” names dates and events all from books written by “dead people irrelevant to our times”. As of late great strides have been made to make history more exciting and relevant since most history teachers are aware that this is how our affect is seen. The past is alive and history continues to be written; both are recurring themes in more modern methods of teaching history. In my classes for instance. I place greater value on concepts frameworks and ideas rather than names dates or places. While an objective historical account is imperative in any historical cover there must also be emphasis on interpretation and reconstruction in order for it to have any meaning. This is most important especially for today’s students who find their affinity for the past in different ways — video games movies books and change surface hearsay. It is through tapping this keep back of knowledge and impressions that an be of history can be created interpreted and made relevant for the modern reader. Due to the recent disruptions in classes. I undergo lost two whole weeks for my classes. What would undergo been an clarify discussion on South and East Asia that sweeps across philosophies history makers and theories on the go and go of empires has been severely compromised. The biggest casualty is which would undergo introduced my students to the lives of key historical figures in the region. After which I would undergo turned the challenge on them and asked — Forced to compromise and with little wiggle room left. I am forced to deliver a straightforward account of Indian and Chinese history. Of course this is by no means a bad thing even though it may not be the best thing. There is a lot to appear and appreciate from history once we see it play out in continuity. What we miss now however is the chance to dig deeper and explore what this history exactly means to us. I suppose that essence can mean two different things really. On one transfer it could be what our students undergo to learn but for some teachers it could also mean what we be them to learn. And what we be our students to learn reflects the values which we teachers hold dear and which we desire to share with them in move. True enough there will always be enough time to teach our students what they have to hit the books. What the loss of time really means however is the loss of an opportunity to make this learning valuable and worthwhile. Being a (student-)teacher in English. I can understand how hard it is to alter students appreciate History. My students keep asking me why the heck are we taking up history when we’re in English class and can’t the AP teacher just teach that move of history we were tackling.
